SUMMARY:Internal Event - The AI Entanglement: Religion\, Technology\, and Humanity
DESCRIPTION:We would like to invite you to AI and Faith’s December Salon on “AI Entanglement: Religion\, Technology and Humanity” with Professor Beth Singler. Professor Singler is the Assistant Professor in Digital Religion(s) at the University of Zurich. She was previously Junior Research Fellow in Artificial Intelligence at Homerton College\, University of Cambridge\, and a post-doctoral researcher of “Human Identity in an age of Nearly Human Machines.” Professor Singler’s work explores the social\, ethical\, philosophical and religious implications of advances in AI and robotics and has published widely on these subjects\, including two books in 2024: “Religion and Artificial Intelligence: An Introduction” and “The Cambridge Companion to Religion and Artificial Intelligence.” \nProfessor Singler will join for a conversation with AI&F’s Pablo A. Ruz Salmones to share her perspective on several areas of intersection between AI and religion. These include the entanglement of religious and technological ideologies\, the interest and association of AI with new religious movements\, and the contribution of religious thinking to ethical discourses on AI. Professor Singler’s wide scholarly perspectives on these issues and more are certain to make for a fascinating discussion\, so please mark your calendar for December 3rd to join us.

SUMMARY:Ethics and Tech Conference: with Partner Seattle University and Expert Nathan Colaner
DESCRIPTION:Join thought leaders from Seattle University\, Flatiron Health\, University of Washington\, Amazon\, Microsoft Health & Life Sciences\, Allen Institute\, Carnegie Mellon\, Seattle Children’s Hospital\, and Truveta as we explore where AI meets humanity in healthcare. \nThe tools of artificial intelligence offer the potential for healthcare to become more effective and equitable. But as we race to embrace these advances\, are we truly ensuring that we do no harm? Thought leaders from across disciplines will discuss the complex issues that emerge as we harness AI for health. Join us in an important conversation grounded in Seattle University’s Jesuit tradition of facing challenges with reflection and contemplation. \nIn our rush to implement technologies that hold the potential to improve the quality of healthcare in obvious ways\, we must have careful conversations about whether these new tools also enable us to respect values fundamental to human dignity\, such as autonomy\, privacy\, and the right to self-determination. \nRegister at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/where-ai-meets-humanity-in-healthcare-whats-next-tickets-577608952927?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:Internal Event - AI and Diversity in the Workforce
DESCRIPTION:Click here to listen to the podcast from this event. \nPlease join us for our June Salon on “AI and Diversity in the Workforce” with AI&F Expert Yasmin Ali. Yasmin is the founder of Skillspire\, an education startup that offers technology boot camps for immigrants\, refugees\, and women\, largely taught by part-time instructors who are also technology professionals. She was also an early and visionary member of the Muslim Association of Puget Sound (MAPS) and remains active in leadership there.  \nYasmin will be drawing directly from her experience navigating technology and the workplace to discuss the challenges and surprises that AI is currently bringing. Possible worker replacement by AI and the use of AI in hiring processes will surely interact with already complex situations regarding diversity in the workplace and the situation of immigrants in the labor force. Whether AI will enhance workers and make for more just opportunities\, or only provide obstacles in the way of these\, remains to be seen. And how faith will affect and be affected by all this technology remains an open question.

SUMMARY:Internal Event - AI & Work: Cultivating Visions of Hope
DESCRIPTION:Click here to listen to the podcast from this event. \nPlease join us for our May Salon on “AI & Work: Cultivating Visions of Hope” with David Kim! David will be speaking from wide experience in the connection between work and faith\, he is the CEO and co-founder of Goldenwood and has spent the past several decades training\, consulting\, and counseling hundreds of leaders and organizations in developing a meaningful integration of faith and work\, and is the editor of the NIV Faith and Work Bible. He previously served as VP of Faith and Work with Redeemer City to City\, Executive Director of the Center for Faith & Work and Director of the Gotham Fellowship\, all at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in NYC.  \nDavid’s talk will trace the fundamental social imaginations that shape AI and Christianity\, understanding the perils that face us in order to create a new vision of hope for work in the era of AI. He will explore the connection between AI\, the enchanted frame\, and the deceptiveness of our own hearts\, contrasting it with the redemption narrative that shapes the Christian imagination. As we question whether AI will mean greater alienation from work\, or perhaps offer a renewed connection\, faith will be a crucial factor for realizing a hopeful future.

SUMMARY:Internal Event - Misinformation\, Truth and AI: Practitioners Fireside Chat
DESCRIPTION:Click here to listen to the podcast from this event. \nPlease join us for our upcoming Town Hall on Misinformation\, Truth\, and AI with AI&F Expert Andrew DeBerry. He is currently a founder of a cybersecurity company and serves as a Reservist in the U.S. Cyber Command. He has led teams for AI and cybersecurity initiatives at Meta\, AWS\, and Microsoft\, and has studied engineering\, Catholic Social Teaching\, and Public Policy at Notre Dame\, and Masters in Business & Arabic at Wharton-Lauder. The discussion will focus on the core issues of truth in a world of AI\, and how we can navigate the relationship between these issues and faith. The tradeoffs between freedom and security\, the difficulties of moderating and regulating public platforms\, the impact of these new technologies on national security\, and how new mediations of truth might affect our own individual faith lives are all questions which will need to be answered continuously as more advanced AI technology becomes common. This fireside chat will provide a deep and thoughtful conversation on an increasingly important area of our relationship to technology.

As we collectively confront the challenges presented by the new era of artificial intelligence\, it is essential to underscore the importance of the Catholic Church’s teachings and guidance for the diverse congregations on Earth. This dialogue is committed to addressing some of the most formidable questions raised by AI\, with particular emphasis on the inquiry into the unique qualities that define us as human beings.
