SUMMARY:Interview with Dr. Bob Johansen on His New Book
DESCRIPTION:Date: Tuesday\, November 3\nTime: 8-9am Pacific Time \n\n\n\nA conversation with Dr. Bob Johansen about his new book\nDisciplines of Hope: Generating Faith in the Future for an Anxious World.\n\n\n\n\n \nAI and Faith Executive Director Greg Cootsona will interview Bob about this captivating book and how it can help people face an uncertain future with faith rather than dread. \nThe goal in writing the book is to accept the gifts of faith traditions and GenAI\, but to reject the harm. In the increasingly chaotic future\, we will need new disciplines of hope-in-action\, not just passive hope that you have or don’t have. This book draws on global faith traditions\, but it is not a religious book. It shows how to use GenAI as a medium for meaning-making\, but it is not a technology book. This book shows you how to generate your own discipline of hope and grow faith in the future for others. \nThis is Bob’s 16th book\, drawing on his 50-year career as a professional futurist with Institute for the Future. He wrote this book with Andy Doyle\, Bishop of the Texas Diocese of the Episcopal Church\, and Jeremy Kirshbaum\, a poet and GenAI developer from Tribe AI. They have supported AI and Faith since almost the beginning. They will also draw out how the book’s approach connects to AI and Faith’s work at the intersection of the world’s wisdom traditions and AI. We hope that Andy and Jeremy will be able to join Bob for this conversation. \n\n\n \n\n\n\nRegister here \nMeet the Speakers:\n\nGreg Cootsona is the Executive Director for AI and Faith. He is also a lecturer in Comparative Religion and Humanities at California State University\, Chico\, and co-founder of Science for the Church\, a nonprofit bringing science and technology to Christian congregations. An ordained Presbyterian minister\, he serves as Pastor of Discipleship and Care at Bidwell Presbyterian Church. Greg has authored multiple books including Science and Religions in America (2023) and Negotiating Science and Religion in America (2020)\, both receiving major book nominations. He has directed $4.6 million in grants from organizations including the John Templeton Foundation\, focusing on emerging adult ministries and science-theology integration. With a Ph.D. in systematic and philosophical theology emphasizing theology and science\, Greg has appeared on major media outlets and spoken at several universities. He serves\, or has served\, on advisory councils for BioLogos\, Sinai and Synapses\, the Oxford Interfaith Forum\, and AAAS’s Dialogue on Science\, Ethics\, and Religion. \n\nBob Johansen is a distinguished fellow with the Institute for the Future in Silicon Valley. For more almost 50 years\, Bob has worked as a professional futurist to help organizations around the world prepare for and shape the future\, including large corporations\, universities and nonprofits. The author or co-author of thirteen books\, including the best-selling Get There Early: Sensing the Future to Compete in the Present\, and most recently Office Shock: Creating Better Futures for Work and Living. Bob’s books are used widely in corporations\, universities\, nonprofits\, and at the Army War College. Bob holds a B.S. from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University—as well as an M.Div. degree that focused on world religions. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Global Compassion Coalition – AI Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Date: Wednesday\, November 4\nTime: 11am – 1pm PT / 2pm – 4pm ET / 7pm – 9pm UK\nREGISTER HERE\nAI as Infrastructure for the Support of Compassion and a Better Life \nAI is rapidly changing how we live\, work\, learn\, and connect. Alongside the questions of what AI can do and how quickly it can advance\, I think there’s another important conversation to have: how might AI support better lives and a more compassionate\, connected society? \nOn November 4\, I’ll be joining the Global Compassion Coalition for AI as Infrastructure for the Support of Compassion and a Better Life\, a free online symposium bringing together researchers\, technologists\, educators\, and compassion and social-change leaders to explore these questions. \nAcross two panels\, we’ll look beyond the fear and hype to consider the opportunities and limitations of AI\, what is already being done to orient it toward prosocial values\, and the choices we can make now to help shape its direction. \nAt the heart of the conversation is a very human question: how can AI support compassion\, fairness\, dignity\, connection\, and human flourishing? \nREGISTER HERE\nPanel  1 – What Is Being Done Now to Align AI in a Prosocial Direction?\n\n  Sessei Meg McNeil – Moderator has practiced Soto Zen for over 30 years and currently serves as Head of Practice at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center\, the monastic branch of the San Francisco Zen Center. Alongside her Zen training\, she helped develop the Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute\, which grew out of the mindfulness-based emotional intelligence and leadership program created at Google\, and has worked extensively in the intersection of tech and Buddhist-inspired practices. \n\nRafael Calvo\, PhD is Chair of Design Engineering and Director of the Wellbeing Technologies Lab at Imperial College London’s Dyson School of Design Engineering. A former ARC Fellow at the University of Sydney\, he has published 3 books and over 250 papers (citations: 23\,000; h-index: 73). His research focuses on intelligent systems for wellbeing\, health\, and learning\, combining NLP\, affective computing\, VR\, and human-centred design. Notable projects include mental health platforms\, apps for asthma and conversational agents for dementia. His work has attracted over $10M in funding and improved lives across diverse populations. \n\nMark Graves\, PhD\, is Research Director at AI and Faith and Research Associate Professor of Psychology at Fuller Theological Seminary. His research explores the intersection of artificial intelligence\, ethics\, and theology. He holds a PhD in computer science specializing in artificial intelligence and an MA in systematic and philosophical theology\, with additional fellowships spanning genomics\, moral psychology\, and moral theology. Alongside his academic work\, Mark brings 15 years of experience developing AI and data solutions across the biotech\, pharmaceutical\, and healthcare industries. He has held teaching or research positions at eight institutions and authored more than ninety technical and scholarly publications\, including three books. \n\nJane  Compson\, PhD\, is Associate Professor at the University of Washington\, Tacoma\, where she teaches religious studies and philosophy. Her research explores contemplative practices and Buddhist thought in contemporary secular contexts\, including artificial intelligence ethics\, medical ethics\, and education. She is a trained teacher of Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT) and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)\, and a Buddhist chaplain with lay ordination from the Zen Peacemaker Order. Jane is also a Research Fellow with AI and Faith\, bringing the wisdom of faith traditions to conversations around AI ethics\, and is currently writing a book on Buddhism and AI. \n\nMax Lamparth\, PhD\, is a Research Fellow at Stanford University with the Hoover Institution’s Technology Policy Accelerator\, the Stanford Intelligence Systems Laboratory\, and the Stanford Center for AI Safety.
