We invite you to join us on Saturday\, January 25\, 2025\, at 1 pm EST for “AI & Christianity.” \nJoanna Ng is a former IBM-er\, pivoted to a start-up founder\, focusing on Artificial Intelligence\, specialized in Augmented Cognition\, by integrating with IoT and Blockchain\, in the context of web3\, by applying design-thinking methodology. With forty-nine patents granted to her name\, Joanna was accredited as an IBM Master Inventor. She held a seven-year tenure as the Head of Research\, Director of the Center for Advanced Studies\, IBM Canada. She has published over twenty peer-reviewed academic publications and co-authored two computer science books with Springer\, The Smart Internet\, and The Personal Web. She published a Christianity Today article called “How Artificial Intelligence Is Today’s Tower of Babel” and published her first book on faith and discipleship in October 2022\, titled Being Christian 2.0. \nRosalind Picard is founder and director of the Affective Computing Research Group at the MIT Media Laboratory; co-founder of Affectiva\, which provides Emotion AI; and co-founder and chief scientist of Empatica\, which provides the first FDA-cleared smartwatch to detect seizures. Picard is author of over three hundred peer-reviewed articles spanning AI\, affective computing\, and medicine. She is known internationally for writing the book\, Affective Computing\, which helped launch the field by that name\, and she is a popular speaker\, with a TED talk receiving ~1.9 million views. Picard is a fellow of the IEEE and the AAAC\, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. She holds a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech and a Masters and Doctorate\, each in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science\, from MIT. Picard leads a team of researchers developing AI/machine learning and analytics to advance basic science as well as to improve human health and well-being\, and has served as MIT’s faculty chair of their MindHandHeart well-being initiative. \nThis free 75-minute virtual symposium is open to ASA members and the general public alike. It includes key elements of the ASA approach — an opening talk on a vital science-faith issue of the day followed by Q&A. We are delighted that ASA Fellow Derek Schuurman will be facilitating this important conversation. \nRegister in advance for this webinar here. \nCome join us for this annual public-facing event and help us spread the word. SUMMARY:Internal Event - AI and Gaming: Games for Change
DESCRIPTION:The power of new ways to tell stories about AI and the big challenges and opportunities it presents has been an important subject for AI and Faith almost from our inception. AI has been a great disruptor recently in this world as well\, affecting how film\, art\, and video games are created and changing the employment and power picture in dramatic ways. Our Advisor Chris Skaggs has been a leading voice for us in understanding all that is happening in the video game world\, including around moral education for children that his own game design company\, Soma Games\, offers. Recently\, two experts in the emerging “games for change” world\, Amy and Ryan Green\, joined us as Contributing Fellows. Their courageous pioneering game That Dragon Cancer won multiple awards and international publicity\, though at great personal cost. Chris will interview Ryan and Amy about how they became involved in this world\, why they made this video game\, and where they see the future of such media as a way to both entertain\, educate\, and encourage beneficial change\, including in our own key area of bringing faith values to the design of AI based products.

SUMMARY:Internal Event - Engaging Tech Policy\, Business and Law with a Commitment to Faith
DESCRIPTION:Our Spring Town Hall brings together two of AI&F’s Advisors: Jon Palmer\, the General Counsel of Microsoft\, in conversation with Kenneth Cukier\, the deputy executive editor of The Economist. They will discuss the intersections of religion\, ethics\, law\, and policy on business and society. What have been the influences (both positive and negative) that religion has had on US law\, legal ethics and the legal profession? How has this influenced Jon’s professional life\, and the role of Christian doctrine in the way he views ethics\, practices law\, and sees his role as a lawyer? What are the challenges and opportunities that AI presents in these contexts and the need for AI to develop in a way that aligns with ethical considerations? Their diverse backgrounds will make an especially interesting conversation: Jon is the son of a prominent Presbyterian pastor; Kenn’s father fled the Holocaust and took him to Quaker meetings as a child.

SUMMARY:Internal Event - Teaching AI to Care: Prioritizing Wisdom and Compassion over Raw Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:What if the key to safe AI and AGI isn’t making it smarter\, but making it wiser? AI and Faith Research Fellow Mark Graves discusses his approach to AI development that prioritizes practical wisdom and compassion over raw intelligence. We explore how ancient philosophical traditions from Aristotle to Buddhism could guide the next generation of AI systems\, and why suffering should be central to AI ethics. Moreover\, how can we embed said wisdom and compassion in AI systems? How can we measure it? Additionally\, we’ll also explore how healthcare applications are already demonstrating what compassionate AI looks like in practice. This conversation challenges conventional thinking about AI safety and offers a surprisingly hopeful vision for human-AI collaboration. \n

SUMMARY:AI x Summit | University of Wisconsin\, Madison
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of conversation at the intersection of artificial intelligence\, responsibility\, and faith. Todd Korpi\, author of AI Goes to Church\, leads a practical exploration of how AI can serve ministry while helping leaders navigate technology responsibly and faithfully. Next\, a public panel organized by the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Center for Humanistic Inquiry into AI and Uncertainty features UW faculty examining not just what AI can do\, but what it should do\, and how communities can shape its influence with insight\, care\, and awareness. The day concludes with an evening of exploration into the profound questions at the heart of today’s AI revolution with theologian and computer scientist Noreen Herzfeld\, drawing from her acclaimed book The Artifice of Intelligence — examining how artificial intelligence challenges our understanding of human uniqueness\, the image of God\, and what it means to love our neighbors in an increasingly digital world. Greg Cootsona\, Executive Director of AI and Faith\, will join Herzfeld in conversation following her presentation. \nMore information here: https://isthmus.com/events/ai-x-summit/
