Hosting conversations within our Expert Community that cross fertilize the knowledge of our experts, and providing panels and speakers for outside events are two key strategies for fulfilling AI&F’s mission to speak knowledgeably into the ethics debate around AI from diverse faith perspectives.
Presently our internal community conversations take the form of “Town Halls” and “Salons”. Town Halls are major “come all” events in which we gather to hear an expert in our community share on a topic of particularly current interest. Salons are more informal monthly gatherings in which typically several dozen of our experts gather to hear and discuss presentations on important issues that often tie to the monthly theme of our editorial features.
Our contributions to external conferences add voices with genuine and relevant expertise to the conference topics, drawing directly or indirectly on an integration of the expert’s ethics and substantive work with their faith beliefs.

September 2023
Please join our third “Town Hall” of 2023 featuring our Advisor Rabbi Mois Navon, who has followed his 35-year career as a pioneering AI computer design engineer with doctoral study at Bar Ilan University in Tel Aviv on how humans should interact, morally, with humanoids.  Rabbi Mois’ most recent publication is Autonomous Weapons Systems and Battlefield Dignity – A Jewish Perspective, a chapter in the July 2023 book Alexa, How Do You Feel about Religion?” Technology, Digitization and Artificial Intelligence in the Focus of AI, co-edited by our AI&F Advisor Anna Puzo.  Certainly, machine made decisions on the battlefield present the hardest edge of attempts at moral algorithmic decisionmaking, AI&F’s theme for September and October.  Our Town Hall host Pablo Ruz Salmones will also explore with Rabbi Mois his front row seat on AI research in Israel since the 1990s, and the AI ethics conversation there.Â

We’re excited to have our AI&F Advisor and renowned Silicon Valley futurist Bob Johansen as the subject and focus of our October Salon. Bob is a Distinguished  Fellow with the Institute for the Future where for almost 50 years he has helped shape the rise of the modern technology revolution through groundbreaking insight and analysis. Bob will talk about what it was like to arrive in Palo Alto when Xerox PARC and Stanford Research Institute were just beginning to create the rudiments of the modern computing age, significant turning points that informed his own advice and counsel about technology developments, and his “future back” methodology for working backward from a future cast. Bob will also discuss his long term study and engagement with the future of technology in religion, something he has done for major denominations and discussed as part of our AI&F panel at the 2022 American Academy of Religion on AI and the Future of Religion in 2041.    Â
Bob now lives and works from Bainbridge Island, Washington. He holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University—as well as an M.Div. degree that focused on world religions. He is the author or co-author of thirteen books, including the best-selling Get There Early: Sensing the Future to Compete in the Present, and most recently Office Shock: Creating Better Futures for Work and Living.

We cordially invite you to participate in an intellectually stimulating dialogue with Bishop Paul Tighe of the Dicastery for Culture and Education at the Vatican, concerning the active role the Vatican plays in the contemporary AI revolution, including the latest book from the Dicastery’s AI Research Group, Encountering Artificial Intelligence. This discussion will delve into how the Church engages the global Catholic community in response to these technological innovations. We will also explore the collaborative efforts between the Church, international institutions, and other religious entities.
Moreover, our exploration will focus on elucidating how the teachings of the Church can offer valuable guidance to a broad spectrum of individuals, encompassing scientists, technology entrepreneurs, policymakers, and, of equal significance, the congregations in various countries. As we collectively confront the challenges presented by the new era of artificial intelligence, it is essential to underscore the importance of the Catholic Church’s teachings and guidance for the diverse congregations on Earth. This dialogue is committed to addressing some of the most formidable questions raised by AI, with particular emphasis on the inquiry into the unique qualities that define us as human beings.
