Emily Wenger is pursuing a PhD in computer science at the University of Chicago where she is especially interested in the intersection of machine learning and privacy. Emily works in the SAND (Security, Algorithms, Network, and Data) Lab at UChicago where her research explores the limitations, vulnerabilities, and privacy implications of neural networks. Emily was an integral part of a project at UChicago recently featured in the New York Times called Fawkes: Protecting Personal Privacy against Unauthorized Deep Learning Models, concerning software intended to shield online photographs from data scraping. Following her graduation from Wheaton College with a degree in mathematics and physics, Emily worked for two years as a mathematician at the US Department of Defense before starting her PhD studies in 2018. Emily is excited to develop further connections with both academic and industry AI researchers who are people of faith interested and engaged with the ethical opportunities and challenges posed by artificial intelligence.
