In June, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy published a Request for Information seeking public comments to help update U.S. national priorities and future actions on AI. AI&F Contributing Fellow Ben Dynkin brought this RFI to the attention of AI&F leaders on June 23. Working together through the Fourth of July holiday, Ben as principal drafter with help in particular from AI&F experts Jane Compson, Peter Hershock, Don Howard, Barry Dynkin, and David Brenner, crafted a response to five of the 29 questions in the RFI that were especially relevant to our mission and filed it with 45 minutes to spare!
Our 10-page Response is a compelling call on the White House to actively engage diverse faith-oriented AI technology creators, ethicists, theologians, and leaders and their perspectives to help shape its approach to AI’s role in society. The Response draws on specific examples from our Newsletter features, interviews, and news stories.
We circulated the near-final response to over a dozen AI&F experts who were diverse by faith tradition and disciplines. Each one signed the Response, thereby presenting the White House with a united affirmation of our AI&F call for the inclusion of sophisticated faith perspectives on AI ethics in the formulation of a national AI strategy. Thanks to Ben, other contributors and the signators of the letter, for this excellent work over the Fourth of July holiday and under a very short deadline!
Mike
