This summer, Nina Lutz, a PhD student at the University of Washington, joined Microsoft Research to interview nearly 50 religious leaders on how they approach technology in both ministry and personal spiritual practice. Her work, part of the new Technology for Religious Empowerment (T4RE) initiative, brings unique faith-based perspectives into the software creation process. In this podcast, Nina shares the surprising insights she uncovered from her conversations.
Meet our Speakers:
Host: David Brenner currently serves as the board chair of AI and Faith. For 35 years he practiced law in Seattle and Washington DC, primarily counseling clients and litigating claims related to technology, risk management and insurance. He is a graduate of Stanford University and UC Berkeley’s Law School.
Guest: Nina Lutz is a PhD student at the University of Washington. Her research focuses on digital safety and participatory visual culture as these things intersect during high stakes events like elections and with intimate personal experiences, like immigration and religion. This summer, via her Microsoft Research internship, she conducted a landscape analysis of how religious stakeholders conceptualize and evaluate technology and relationships with technology in their daily and religious lives. She also led the first of its kind digital safety exercise of interfaith red teaming at Microsoft Research with Seattle area faith leaders.
