has authored or edited 11 books on the religious and social implications of radical human technological enhancement, including the coauthored (with Canadian scholar, Tracy J. Trothen) Religion and the Technological Future: Biohacking, Artificial Intelligence, and Transhumanism, which won an International Society for Science and Religion book prize. Mercer coedits (with UK scholar, Steve Fuller) the book series, Palgrave Studies in the Future of Humanity and Its Successors. Professor of Religion at East Carolina University, Mercer is founding chair of the American Academy of Religion “Human Enhancement and Transhumanism” Unit and is a Christian Transhumanist Association Academic Advisor.
