The environmental impact of AI models has been an important consideration as more data centers are built to sustain further model training and inference. Many of these data centers, which utilize large water resources to maintain, are now being built in Latin America. In this piece, AI and Faith expert Manuel David Morales considers the impact of these data centers on local communities and considers a Christian response to this current buildout.

Pope says theology must address climate change and AI. Speaking at a seminar on “Creation, Nature, Environment for a World of Peace,” hosted the Pontifical Academy of Theology, Pope Leo XIV noted the urgent relevance of the issues saying that “Environmental sustainability and the care of creation are essential commitments to ensure the survival of the human race…They have a direct impact on the organization of our societies and on the possibility of peaceful and cooperative human coexistence.”
The World Council of Churches met in August 2025 and issued an urgent call to transform AI from profit to life. The communique, representing faith leaders from six continents, is a theological response to the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and includes a call for churches to defend ecological integrity in the face of AI related environment issues: “Despite its digital appearance, the 4IR is deeply material,” involving mineral extraction and massive consumption of electricity and water.
